Three people, including the wife and son of newly elected mayor of Faridpur’s Nagarkanda municipality, were killed and seven people, including the mayor, were seriously injured, in a head-on collision between a microbus and a bus in Faridpur on Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Sanchita Sarker, 45, wife of Mayor Nimay Chandra Sarkar, their son Gobinda Chandra Sarker, and mayor’s associate Kamal Hossain, 27.

The microbus carrying the victims collided with the passenger bus coming from opposite direction on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Kaylar junction of Kaichail Union in the upazila around 8:30 pm, leaving mayor’s wife Sanchita and associate Kamal dead on the spot and eight others injured, Omar Farooque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhanga Highway Police Station, said.

The injured mayor and his son were first taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex where duty doctor declared Gobinda dead. The mayor was later shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, said the OC.

Nimay Sarkar was elected mayor of Nagarkanda municipality as Awami League mayoral candidate on February 14.
